In every young person's life, the time eventually comes from them to spread their wings, fly the nest and bid a fond farewell to life under their parents' roof.
This shift brings with it an undeniable sense of independence, but also some pretty big responsibilities, and it's on you to learn fast or face piles of unwashed clothes, unpaid bills and a diet consisting solely of microwavable dinners.
To help prepare you for living on your own, we've teamed up with Gas Networks Ireland to bring you a range of realisations that will dawn on you after moving out.
1. Need work done on gas appliances? You must use a Registered Gas Installer
You can find a RGI at RGI.ie
2. Meal prep is the way forward
Cooking for one can be challenging, but save yourself time and effort by meal-prepping and freezing a few of your favourite meals in advance. And don't worry, you don't have to get fancy with it. Just cook a large portion of your favourite dish, divvy it out into containers and save it for later.
3. Get to know your neighbours
Whether you live in an apartment or a house, it's always worthwhile to reach out to your neighbours. So call over, join the WhatsApp group, and be a friendly face. From lost parcels to local news, it's always a good idea to be on good terms with your neighbours.
4. Your parents were right about leaving the immersion on
We can crack jokes about the peril about leaving the immersion on until the cows come home, but our parents weren't messing around – it can really drive your energy bill up.
5. There's no place like home
It sometimes takes living somewhere different to see how great your family home is, so don't be a stranger! Visit regularly, bring a dish and spend some quality time with the family.
Find a Registered Gas Installer on RGI.ie
Look, if you're having issues with your gas appliances or your pipework needs fixing, only use a Registered Gas Installer (RGI). Not your mate, not your dad, and don't even think about trying it yourself. The fact of the matter is that it is dangerous and illegal for anyone who is not a RGI to work with your gas appliances or pipework. You risk losing everything if you let them. RGIs are fully trained in gas safety and are insured and must supply a certificate upon completion of any works, providing you with peace of mind.
