Women in Ireland have become increasingly interested in getting cosmetic work like lip filler done, but they have been warned against going to unregulated clinics.

Currently, only doctors, dentists, or registered nurses can administer Botox under Irish law.

However, the same rules don't apply to dermal fillers like lip filler.

Many people complete a one-day course and offer the services, but experts believe this can be incredibly dangerous.

Speaking to The Journal, dentist Dr Mairead Browne called for more regulations for dermal fillers.

"Dermal fillers, as medical devices, are very risky procedures," Browne explained.

"But these unlicensed practitioners don’t have the ability to prescribe reversing agents, and they don’t have the ability to prescribe antibiotics and steroids to manage any complications."

What should you know before getting lip fillers?

There is no harm in getting cosmetic work done if it makes you feel more confident but you should always go to a trusted medical provider.

Some places may offer cheaper alternatives, but going to a qualified and trusted professional is key.

Lip filler injections will enhance the shape, volume, and definition of your lips.

The injections contain Hyaluronic Acid which fills wrinkles, adds volume, and makes them appear fuller.

You should always choose an experienced and licensed professional for the procedure.

There are many reasons why people get lip fillers, whether it's to boost their confidence or to change their appearance, but it's a very personal decision to make.

Lip fillers are mainly suggested for people who:

• Are in good physical health
• Have realistic expectations
• Do not have an active oral infection, including canker sores or cold sores

Lip fillers are temporary with most lasting for around 12 to 18 months. This will depend on your age and metabolism.

During your consultation, your doctor will assess your lips and discuss your desired look with you.

They will also consider the shape of your face before agreeing on how much filler is suitable. The typical recommendation is currently 1ml.

You will notice an immediate change after the treatment, but you may suffer from some side effects like bruising or swelling afterward.

Other side effects include tenderness, bleeding from the site of the injection, or redness.

However, side effects like this are only temporary and tend to subside after a few days.
