The Oscars are literally just around the corner

If the history of one of the biggest nights in Hollywood is anything to go by, some outfits will be incredible and others... not so much but all iconic nonetheless.

So ahead of Cillian Murphy bagging his first win (we're manifesting) let's take a look at some of the most fun, fabulous and downright outrageous looks from the past.

Björk, 2001

Of course, we had to start with this one, it's the one that springs to mind when someone talks about iconic Oscars red carpet moments.

The swan dress was surrealist, humourous and memorable though very much hated at the time.

In a big turnaround, it's now widely remembered as one of the most iconic outfits in Oscar history.

Designed by Marjan Pejoski, it was the last piece in a trilogy, after the pink lantern dress for Cannes, and the sequined skirt Golden Globes look.

Celine Dion, 1999

Celine Dion and Galliano for Dior resulted in the ever iconic backwards suit dress situation.

Honestly, these days it definitely wouldn't have been considered a big deal at all, at most she would have landed on a worst dressed list or two.

Yet compared to what else was on the red carpet at the time, this was quite a scandalised look.

Whoopi Goldberg 1993

We're still not sure what was going on with Whoopi Goldberg's look from the 1993 Academy Awards look of a wild purple-and-lime ensemble with an open skirt.

Lizzy Gardiner 1995

Lizzy Gardiner made chain mail fit for the present when she linked no fewer than 254 American Express credit cards (all in her name, though each missing a digit) together and declared herself fit for the red carpet.

"I’m broke, and I didn't have anything to wear," Lizzy later recalled. "So I went through my list of past good ideas [for film costume wardrobes]."

Well she looked like a million bucks.

Cher 1986

There was no missing Cher when she pulled up to the Oscars in her revenge stress - and revenge headdress - in the wake of the Academy snubbing her performance in Peter Bogdanovich’s Mask.

"She was pissed off, because she didn’t get nominated," Bob Mackie, the designer behind so many of her iconic looks, told the New Yorker.

"There were a lot of people who said, 'That’s not fashion!' And I said, 'Of course it’s not fashion. It’s a crazy getup for attention.' And it did get attention - people talk about it still."

Kim Basinger 1990

Kim Basinger donned a bizarre asymmetrical white ballgown during the 1990 ceremony.

The one-sleeve dress featured a dramatic neckline with a collar on one side. She added to the oddness of the overall look by wearing one satiny opera glove on her sleeve-free arm.

Though not particularly our cup of tea, we have to admit it's iconic.
