Add us as a preferred source on Google »There are so many myths and misunderstandings around the use of SPF, one of the most prominent of which is about layering.
If my foundation contains 15 but my moisturiser is 50, which protection do I actually have? Does one cancel out the other?
Well, I went in search of the answer for myself recently, and thought I should bring my findings to you.
Claire O’Bryan, ANP-C, a nurse practitioner, and co-founder of The Skin Clique shed light on this common dilemma: the uncertainty surrounding SPF application when layering makeup products containing protection.
O’Bryan explains the paradox of layering SPF-infused makeup products and while it may seem like a way to enhance sun protection by adding multiple layers, the reality is more nuanced.
"You’re only ever wearing the highest amount of SPF that you put on," she explains.
"Nothing changes the SPF number but the amount of active ingredient in the product."
Despite the perception that additional layers equate to heightened protection, the SPF level remains the same.
However, O’Bryan highlights the advantage of layering in ensuring full coverage, minimising the risk of missed areas.
Delving deeper, O’Bryan said there is a misconception surrounding makeup products boasting SPF.
While these products offer a semblance of sun protection, achieving the advertised SPF level, “typically, to reach the SPF advertised in a true makeup product, you would need to use quite a bit of product," she reveals.
This highlights the inadequacy of relying solely on makeup for sun protection because when it comes to foundation, people generally use it sparingly.
"I always recommend that my patients use a dedicated SPF underneath any makeup that contains SPF," she said.
A personal favourite of mine has been part of my routine for weeks now, and it’s the first facial SPF that really works for me.
