Running as a Fianna Fáil candidate in the Galway West constituency, the former broadcaster and presenter was ultimately not elected, despite months of campaigning.
Speaking after the final count, Seoige said she was disappointed but expressed pride in stepping out of her comfort zone to enter the political arena.
“I’m disappointed it didn’t work out, but I’m very proud that I took the opportunity and made the journey,” she said.
“Nobody achieves anything in this life unless they leave their comfort zone, and I did that.
“It’s an experience I’ll always carry with me. And who knows what the future holds?”
The former Grá ar an Trá presenter also addressed criticism labelling her a “celebrity candidate,” and said the notion that her background in broadcasting undermined her legitimacy was “not nice”.
“The celebrity thing is a tag that people like to attach, and it’s not a nice one because it makes somebody out to be without substance, and I have plenty of substance,” Seoige told Newstalk.
“The Tánaiste himself said I was a substantive candidate yesterday.”
Reflecting on her career in the media, which began in 1996, Seoige pointed out the persistent challenges women face, especially in politics.
“Labels are something I’ve dealt with for years, and it’s something that happens to women across society - particularly to women in politics,” she added.
Now turning her attention to the future, Seoige is taking some well-earned time off after months of campaigning.
“What’s next on the cards is a couple of days’ break,” she revealed. “I’ve been on my feet for three or four months, and I’m tired.
“I need to rest and recharge before deciding what’s next.”
