Speaking to PEOPLE, the 60-year-old actress shared her doubts, admitting she finds it difficult to envision a successful remake of the show, which originally aired from 1994 to 2004.
Reflecting on the magic of the original series, which starred Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer, and the late Matthew Perry, Cox spoke of the challenges they would face trying to recreate that unique chemistry.
“It's hard to try to redo anything,” she said, before adding that any attempt to revive Friends or create a spinoff wouldn’t capture the essence of the original group.
“Anything with 're' in front of it with this group... I think it's so special.”
Despite ongoing demand from fans and numerous pitches to show creators, Marta Kauffman and David Crane, Cox remains unconvinced that a reboot would do justice to the original series.
As Friends approaches its 30th anniversary, the actress spoke at how quickly time has passed.
"It's just insane to me because it feels like time goes so fast, and I don't realise it,” she told PEOPLE.
"We used to say, 'Oh, I can't wait for this month' or 'God, it feels like forever.' I would never say that line anymore."
Cox also reflected on the lasting impact of Friends and how its humour continues to resonate across generations.
"That show is incredible. Every joke holds up, all the characters are just so amazing, and we [had] the best writers in the world,” she said.
“I'm lucky that it continues on through all the generations. And that's very fortunate."
