The First Cases of Zika Virus Confirmed in Ireland

Health authorities are investigating what seem to be the first two cases of Zika virus in Ireland The Irish Times is reporting that health sources have said that two unrelated cases concerning a man and a woman have been confirmed. Both have recently returned to Ireland from overseas travel. The virus is primarily transmitted via mosquito bites but can also be transmitted sexually. Most people who contract the virus suffer minor symptoms however the virus poses a threat to pregnant women as the virus can lead to babies being born with small heads and underdeveloped brains. It is understood that the woman affected is beyond child-bearing age. Both individuals are making a recovery. The HSE stated: “If you become ill within two weeks after your return to Ireland from an affected area, you should contact your doctor for assessment and let him/her know of your recent travel history to an affected area.” The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared Zika to be an international public health emergency on Monday. image via BBC.
