You’re going to be stuck in a seat, getting your suitcase ready, so having a nice, relaxed outfit is always helpful.
But there are some dos and don'ts for a relaxed flight, from what to eat, when you should arrive at the airport, and of course, what to wear.
There are many reasons why people recommend that certain clothes should not be worn on a plane: practicality, safety, and, of course, comfort reasons.
Who What Wear interviewed American Airlines flight attendant Andrea Fischbach, who recommends avoiding any “constricting” clothing, hazardous clothes (which can be “fringe” or “flammable”), as well as high heels, backless sandals, and more.
IGV interviewed Aviation expert Christine Negroni, where they spoke about the dos and don'ts of flying attire.
And like Fischbach, Negroni also advised against wearing high-heeled shoes as they can be a hazard in emergencies:
“If you are using the emergency evacuation chute, you’ll have to remove high-heeled shoes that might puncture the slide, which explains why flats are the best shoe choice.”
Factors such as clothing fabric or material can contribute to why certain items should be avoided, one of the reasons why Negroni advises against wearing leggings.
"Leggings are made of synthetic materials. When these chemically produced fibers get hot, they melt and can bond to the skin.”
She explains that the material could result in scarring or could even be fatal in the event of a fire, which can happen.
"Most air accidents are survivable, but many also involve fire.”
Instead of leggings, she advises wearing garments that are “made of cotton, wool, leather, and yes, even denim, which are preferable over synthetics."
