200 people dead after 7.1 magnitude earthquake hits Mexico

At least 200 people are dead after a strong earthquake hit central Mexico on Tuesday afternoon.

The 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit the Puebla state, 123km from Mexico City. Government officials have said that over 20 children and several adults had died and around 30 were still missing after a school partially collapsed in Mexico City. According to The Guardian, 500 soldiers and Navy marines are searching for the students and employees who are still missing. He emphasised that many people will need help, but that the priority has to be finding people  who are trapped in the collapsed buildings. He said:

“The priority at this moment is to keep rescuing people who are still trapped and to give medical attention to the injured people.”
