Reports indicate that the victim suffered head injuries, with Spanish police sources noting "signs of violence”.
The grim discovery was made by a housekeeper at the Colina Mar apartment-hotel complex in the Puerto Rico resort area in the southern part of Gran Canaria.
Despite efforts by medics, the young man was pronounced dead at the scene.
A male companion, who is thought to be a fellow traveller, was also present during the arrival of law enforcement officers.
The victim was initially reported as British, but later it was clarified by police sources that he was in fact Irish.
Police await the results of an autopsy, scheduled for Wednesday, in order to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the tragic death.
Expressing their condolences, SDLP South Down MLA Colin McGrath extended sympathy to the the man’s family and friends, acknowledging the grief caused by the overseas nature of the incident.
McGrath emphasised that the family will be kept informed during the ongoing investigation and they will receive necessary support during this trying time.
The MLA expressed hope for the quick repatriation of the deceased to Downpatrick for a final farewell.
He commended the community's solidarity in offering kindness to the grieving family during such an unfathomable loss.
A full investigation is underway.
