Harris ready to intervene after Irish woman charged with ‘attempted suicide’ in Dubai

She has been blocked from leaving the country.

28-year-old Tori Towey, an Emirates Airlines cabin crew employee, was allegedly violently assaulted at her home in Dubai.

According to the advocacy group Detained in Dubai, she was then taken into police custody and charged with 'attempted suicide and alcohol consumption'.

Ms Towey, who is from Boyle in Co Roscommon, has had her passport blocked and is banned from leaving Dubai. She is desperate to come home to Ireland.

Speaking in the Dáil this week, the Taoiseach called Ms. Towey's situation "the most appalling circumstances".

The case was brought to the Dáil by Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald, who has been supporting Ms Towey throughout.

"She has been the victim of the most gross domestic violence," Ms McDonald said. "Her passport has been destroyed. There was a travel ban imposed on her."

She added that the Government must make it "absolutely plain to the authorities of Dubai that no woman should be treated in this way, and an Irish citizen, an Irish woman, will not be treated in this way".

Speaking to RTÉ News, Sinn Féin TD for Roscommon-Galway Claire Kerrane said: "There is a court case due to be held next week, but hopefully it won't have to go that far.

"It's important for us now to keep up the pressure on the Government and Dubai authorities to do the right thing."

Radha Stirling, CEO of the Detained in Dubai advocacy group has also called on authorities to drop the charges, remove the travel ban, and let Towey fly home with her mother to Ireland.
