Garraway revealed that her husband was suffering from 'severe life threatening sepsis'

Good Morning Britain host Kate Garraway returned to the show this morning to provide audiences with an update on her husband Derek Draper's condition, explaining he was suffering from 'severe life threatening sepsis'. Garraway, 55, was forced to take an extended leave of absence from the popular ITV morning show on July 9 when her husband Draper, 54, was rushed to hospital in serious condition. The former political lobbyist has been struggling in recent months with a prolonged battle with Covid-19, something that has left him in critical condition and in an induced coma. Despite his health improving slightly since, Draper was said to still require round-the-clock care and was rushed to hospital once more in early July, forcing his wife Garraway to temporarily hit pause on her hosting duties on Good Morning Britain. Yesterday, Monday August 1, marks Garraway's first return to the show in a number of weeks. "I got a phone call from the person who was looking after him saying, 'Right, we're really worried'. I whizzed home and it just sort of went boom from there," Garraway told co-host Richard Madeley, explaining how she received word about her husband's critical condition whilst she was on air. "We called an ambulance, went to A&E, where they said he had very severe sepsis, life-threatening sepsis. So it was really dramatic." Garraway continued, telling Madeley: "His blood pressure was so low. A really junior doctor said 'What did you think it might be?' He knew it wasn't Covid-19 because we tested before we left the hospital on the Thursday. "I said 'Well I did wonder if it was a urine infection, but weirdly we couldn't get anything for a sample.' And they just went, 'Kidneys'. "Unfortunately, his kidneys were really badly infected, blocked. The challenge now is to save them. So that's where we've been for the last three weeks." Garraway concluded her visit to the show by explaining that, despite a difficult few weeks, her husband Draper is now off the intensive care unit and on his way toward recovery. "One kidney is looking really good, just need to look at the other one," she said, adding: "Still in high dependency."
