Memorial concert planned for Sophie Toscan du Plantier

It marks what would have been her 65th birthday.

A concert is being held in west Cork later this month to honour the memory of Sophie Toscan du Plantier. Sophie was murdered at her holiday home just outside the town of Goleen in Cork in 1996. She was 36-years-old. The intention of the upcoming concert, which is titled Remember Me, is to mark Sophie's 65th birthday. It was originally supposed to go ahead on her actual birthday, 27 July, but the organisers had to reschedule as it clashed with a major sailing competition in Schull. Now, it will take place on 23 September at the Harbour View Hotel. Among guests in attendance will be Sophie's aunt Marie Madeleine Opalka. It's thought that her son, Pierre Louis Baudey-Vignaud and her uncle, Jean Pierre Gazeau may also attend. It's understood that a statement on behalf of Sophie's parents – Marguerite and Georges Bouniol – will be read aloud. Speaking ahead of the event, one of its organisers Bill Hogan likened it to a traditional Irish wake. He told The Southern Star, a local west Cork paper: "It will be an opportunity for friends, family and neighbours to come together to show their respect and esteem for someone who was lost." He also said (via RTÉ) that the event will be a "space for healing." "It (her murder) is like an open wound, and it will be very good for her family, and the community, to coalesce around the things she loved." He added: "The response within the community to the memorial concert has been overwhelming." Artists performing at the event include fiddle player Liam Kenneally, harpist Mairead Casey, soprano Wendy Dwyer, tenor Ryan Morgan, pianist Antoinette Baker, cellist Diana Llewellyn, violinist Carol Daly and spoken word artists Pat Bracken and Gaelle Lacquement.
