Met Éireann confirm snow is on the way as temperatures continue to drop

After a few milder weeks, it looks like the colder weather has finally arrived - and with the chillier temperatures comes the snow. Yes, that's right: Met Éireann have confirmed that snow is on the forecast for tonight [Thursday, January 17]. Forecasters have warned that it's going to be "cold tonight", as temperatures drop to 0 to 2C. There's going to be some frost setting in through some eastern and northern parts of the country soon after dark. They added:

"Outbreaks of rain will extend eastwards across the country overnight, preceded in some areas by a brief period of sleet and wet snow"

And it's only going to get colder, as Friday is set to be "cold, breezy and wet" for part of the morning - with the temperatures dropping to -1C on Friday night. https://twitter.com/MetEireann/status/1085869787048263680 The Met Éireann forecaster continued:

"Cold, breezy and wet for a time tomorrow morning, but brightening up in most places by the afternoon, with sunny spells and showers. "Most of the showers will affect Atlantic coastal counties, where some will be heavy and prolonged. Top temperatures 7C to 9C generally, but 4C to 6C degrees in Ulster."

It's going to be cold overnight (again), with clear spells and some showers, with a slight risk of hail. Temperatures will drop as low as 1C in some areas of the country, with frost in some places and icy stretches on roads. It's going to continue to be cold into the weekend, as well as into the start of next week. Temperatures will be below normal, with frost most nights and a higher risk of icy patches.
