Add us as a preferred source on Google »Riverdance legend, Michael Flatley, has revealed (in an unorthodox way) that he is seeking to run to become Ireland’s president.
The Irish-American dancer is set to move back to Ireland in the next few weeks where he “intends to seek nominations to run for president of Ireland”.
The news was revealed in court where his lawyer announced the news during a case regarding works that have gone on at Flatley’s mansion in Co. Cork.
The Lord Of The Dance star is eligible to run for presidency as an Irish citizen.
To be eligible to run, a candidate must be an Irish citizen who is 35 or older.
The 67-year-old was born in Chicago in the US to Irish parents.
His father, Michael, was a plumber from Sligo, while his mother Eilish, was a talented step dancer from Carlow.
Both of Flatley’s parents left their homes for the US in 1947 before meeting at an Irish dance in Detroit.
Just last week Flatley strongly hinted at running, saying during a radio interview that he doesn’t believe Irish people ‘have a voice – not a true proper deep voice that speaks their language’.
Flatley added that he hears concerns from the ‘average person on the street’ saying ‘they’re not happy right now’.
An election for the next president of Ireland is expected later this year.
