Posters attacking Meryl Streep for ‘enabling’ Harvey Weinstein appear

The posters have appeared on the streets of LA.

It was reported this week that Meryl Streep is encouraging actresses to wear black to the Golden Globes in support of the #MeToo movement. However, the move was quickly criticised by many with actresses like Rose McGowan taking to Twitter to share their disappointment with the decision.

“Actresses like Meryl Streep who happily worked for The Pig Monster are wearing black to the Golden Globes in a silent protest. "Your silence is the problem,” read her tweet.

Rose McGowan is one of the most vocal accusers of Harvey Weinstein and has been using her platform to encourage other women to come forward and speak about the sexual injustices they’ve experienced. However, it seems McGowan’s tweet has led to a smear campaign from street artists against Streep. Posters with the Oscar-winner’s face on them have appeared on the streets of LA over the past few days with the words “She knew” branded across her eyes.

Pictures of the posters were shared online by The Hollywood Reporter who said:

“Meryl Streep is seemingly being depicted as a Harvey Weinstein enabler by anonymous LA street artists.”

Streep released a statement in response to McGowan’s tweet earlier this week, saying:

“It hurt to be attacked by Rose McGowan in banner headlines this weekend. “I wasn’t deliberately silent. I didn’t know. I don’t tacitly approve of rape. “I [want] to express both my deep respect for her and others’ bravery in exposing the monsters among us, and my symptahy for the untold, ongoing pain she suffers.”

However, many are criticising the posters for attacking people like Meryl Streep who has condemned the actions of Harvey Weinstein since learning of the allegations against him.
