Sinn Féin to call for referendum on Irish unification if Britain chooses to leave EU

The Brexit referendum is to be voted for or against on June 23.

The European Union membership referendum will determine whether the United Kingdom will remain a part of the EU which will affect the residents of Britain greatly. Following the news that the Scottish National Party have ambitions for another independence vote should Britain choose to leave Europe, a member of European Parliament for Sinn Féin Matt Carthy has followed suit with the same opinion. According to AnPhoblacht, the republican politician said that Britain leaving the EU would leave a  'democratic imperative' for a new referendum on Irish reunification. Carthy, speaking at a conference in Ballycastle, Co. Antrim spoke of his hopes for a united decision:

"The only type of united Ireland that interests me in is one that is agreed..." "inclusive, pluralist and which is constructed by all our citizens, from whatever background or tradition.”

Carthy urged that the potential referendum would not threaten any certain part of a community and include all of society:

"Sinn Féin's commitment to pursuing a unity referendum merely underlines our firm resolve to end Partition peacefully, democratically and by agreement. "In any referendum campaign we would seek to convince people of the economic, social and political potential of reunification.”
