Apparently, solar storms can affect satellites in orbit, which could lead to a lack of GPS, mobile phone signal and satellite TV.
Also, a surge of particles can lead to high currents in the magnetosphere (big word alert).
This can lead to higher level of electricity in power lines, resulting in electrical transformers and power stations blow outs and a loss of power.
