This is the most fly-infested county in Ireland

Have you noticed a big increase in flies this year?

Pest control company Rentokil have revealed the most fly-infested counties in Ireland this year, and say that there has been a 39 percent increase in infestations between April June, when compared to the same period last year. Dr Colm Moore, the company's area technical manager for the UK and Ireland, says flies are a significant heath risk:

“Flies can be a common cause of food poisoning, particularly salmonella, and as such they create a real risk to the hospitality industry. A continued rise in the fly population could lead to a greater incidence of fly-borne disease, such as stomach upset and diarrhoea. Fly larvae take seven to ten days to mature into adults, and in their lifetime they may produce 1,000 eggs. If a small infestation is not stopped, you will see a dramatic increase in their numbers."

If you're living in Dublin and have spent the last few months swatting at the little blighters, then you won't be surprised to learn that the capital city accounts for almost one fifth (18 percent) of the country's fly infestation. Galway comes in second with 16 percent, Kerry third at 14 percent, and Cork last with 12 percent of the nation's irritating insects.
