Heart shattering.
Honey, spent the last two years of her life in a small pool at the Marine Park Aquarium in Choshi, Japan.
The death of the female bottlenose dolphin, which occurred in 2020, was confirmed by the US-based charity, the Dolphin Project.
She was captured in 2005 as part of Taiji’s brutal drive hunts and spent the remainder of her life in captivity.
Honey first made headlines in 2018 when it was revealed she, alongside 46 penguins, had been abandoned at the aquarium.
The facility closed in 2011 following the earthquake and Fukushima nuclear crisis.
Employees continued feeding the animals, but aside from this, they were left to fend for themselves in unsanitary conditions.
Honey's story was featured in the 2009 Oscar winning film, The Cove.
The Dolphin Project attempted to rescue Honey and the other animals, and even explored purchasing her from the facilities owners.
However, by March 2020, it was clear that her health was beyond repair.
Photos and videos of Honey's final years saw her floating in a small, dirty pool in an abandoned facility.
The images of her and other animals sparked outcry online, with #SaveHoney going viral.
Despite the attempts, Honey unfortunately did die in isolation.
Fears have now been raised over the remaining animals trapped in filthy tanks after the marine company went bankrupt.
The animals are forced to endure human encounters, including human's swimming alongside them.
Campaigners are concerned the animas are going blind after they were filmed swimming with their eyes 'jammed shut' in the filthy water.
Additionally, four of the dolphins have died mysteriously, including one in March that landed on its head in a shallow pool.
