Are we witnessing a goth revival in fashion?

Gothic vibes for spring? It's more likely than you think.

Perhaps it's the effect of the soaring popularity of Netflix's Wednesday, or the enduring appeal of the subculture, but it seems that goth fashion is sticking around, particularly if this year's fashion shows and red carpet gowns are anything to go by. Rodarte kicked off New York Fashion week with an unmistakably gothic event. Designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy were inspired by fairies for this showcase, though they took that aesthetic down a distinctly dark path. Models with dark eyeliner and witchy lips took to the runway in a flurry of witchy silouhettes, dark tones and plenty of vampiric lace. The result? A spectacle that is as ethereal as it is gothic. It's not just at couture shows that we see a gothic aesthetic thriving, but on the red carpet as well. At this year's Grammy Awards, for instance, goth beauty and fashion reigned supreme. Singer Anitta looked every part a gothic bride in this vintage Atelier Versace gown. Doja Cat was similarly on theme with a black latex gown, paired with an intricate eyeliner look. Sam Smith and Kim Petras, meanwhile, were joined on the red carpet by RuPaul's Drag Race stars Violet Chacki and Gottmik. Together, this ensemble proved that goth and colour are not mutually exclusive, as they brightened up their looks with this vibrant shade of red.
