25 years ago today, the first ever text message was sent by a lad named Neil Papworth, a test engineer who sent the message through Vodafone using a PC.
It read: 'Merry Christmas.'

Neil was just 22-years-old at the time and he didn't really think that the sending of the first SMS (short message service) was actually going to be as much of a big deal as it was.

The humble text seems to be under threat by the likes of WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger though, with many opting to use online services instead of network ones to send their messages.
