Kim Kardashian buys a necklace worn by Princess Diana for £163,800

Diana wore the piece of 1920s jewellery on several occasions.

Kim Kardashian has become the new owner of Attallah Cross, a highly valuable necklace that had been worn by the late Princess Diana. According to The Guardian, Kim beat out three other bidders before acquiring the pendant at a sale at Sotheby's in London on Wednesday. The reality star is reported to have paid £163,800 for the cross after a representative did the bidding on her behalf. The pendant dates back to the 1920s and it was designed by Garrard. Its cross is made out of square-cut amethysts and circular-cut diamonds. Businessman Naim Attallah bought the pendant in the 1980s, and as he was friends with Princess Diana, he loaned it to her on several occasions. The Princess of Wales famously wore it to a charity gala in London in 1987. Kristian Spofforth, who is the Sotheby's London's head of jewellery, spoke about the legacy of the necklace after it was worn by Diana. He said: "To some extent, this unusual pendant is symbolic of the princess’s growing self-assurance in her sartorial and jewellery choices, at that particular moment in her life." Kim is no stranger to significant items of in celebrity fashion history. Last year, she famously borrowed a dress worn by Marilyn Monroe to the Met Gala. The legendary Hollywood star wore the garment while performing for President John F. Kennedy's birthday at Madison Square Garden 60 years ago. Kim said that she chose to honour Marilyn Monroe on the Met Gala, as the theme of the evening was Gilded Glamour, and she wanted to wear "the most American thing" she could think of.
