Irish language short film based on Mean Girls goes viral

The short was made to mark the classic comedy turning 21-years-old next month.

Titled Cailíní Gránna (Mean Girls in Irish), the film was produced by Mumbro Top and reimagines the Tina Fey-scripted comedy through "Irishfied characters and localised pop culture moments".

Created to mark Mean Girls' 21st anniversary next month, Cailíní Gránna's makers have said the short "serves as both a tribute to the enduring influence of Mean Girls and a showcase for the
vibrancy of the Irish language".

Written and directed by and starring Hilary Bowen-Walsh as Regina George, the short also features Megan O'Malley as Lindsay Lohan's character - whose name has been changed from Cady to Kayleigh - as well as a host of other young Irish talent.

Cailíní Gránna premiered as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge le Energia, the international Irish language festival and largest annual celebration of Ireland's native language and culture.

Since hitting the web, it has attracted thousands of views on YouTube. It's also been praised in several outlets for its loving homage to the original, its playful references to Irish pop culture and its spotlighting of the Irish language.

It's also worth tuning in for the short's end credits, which play out over a lovely Irish language cover to Chappell Roan hit 'Hot to Go!!' (Mhac Go Deo), which is sung by Caoimhe Doyle.
