The pair make the long journey from Scotland to Australia to fight for custody of Alistair's daughter, Chloe, who he shares with his ex wife.
But when the couple make a quick stop on a remote roadside outside of Melbourne, their own baby son, Noah, goes missing.
And it looks like things soon spiral out of control.
The Cry follows what happens next as they continue the desperate search for Noah, while speculation about the state of their own marriage cause doubts about their own innocence.
Alistair is seen telling the camera that he's "trying to hold it together", before it cuts to Joanna telling him "I need you to stop lying to me".
