And like it they definitely did, with Wednesday's special raking in an impressive 11.5 million viewers, making it the most watched programme of Christmas Day.
The episode ended, as most Gavin & Stacey instalments tend to, with a cliffhanger as Nessa proposed to Smithy following a rather chaotic Christmas dinner in Barry.
The ending, understandably, left viewers wanting more - most notably in the form of a fourth season or another special some time down the line.
Ruth Jones, who co-created the series alongside Corden, has since said that the outcome of the proposal could "go either way."
“Well, genuinely I don’t know the answer to that," she told The Sun.
“You could go either way with it. It could be the most ridiculous thing, or it could be a marriage made in heaven.
"But don’t you think it would end the interest? If they did become a proper couple, would that spoil it? These are all questions that we ponder.”
