How A Post-It Note Shaped Romantic Comedies As We Know Them

Pretty Woman as we know it may never have become a reality if it wasn’t for Julia Roberts and a post-it note. According to an interview this week to celebrate the 25^th anniversary of the film, Richard Gere was not going to sign up for the movie at all. Roberts revealed that she had to convince him to take on the famous role. “Well, there wasn’t a part,” Gere explained on why he turned down the role. “There was just nothing. The joke was [it was just] a suit.” He went on to explain that he was on the phone to the director who was trying to convince him to take the part when Julia passed him a post-it note. “She turns it around and she pushes it to me, and it said, ‘Please say yes!’” Gere revealed. Imagine if he’d turned it down – romantic comedies would not be the same.
