Kristen Stewart broke a pretty bizarre rule on the Cannes red carpet this week

But why was it front page news?

If you’ve been keeping an eye on the goings-on at the Cannes Film Festival over the last week, then no doubt you’ve seen some of the fuss about Kristen Stewart. The actress has been a regular on the famous red carpet for years now and is well aware of the long-running (if not ridiculous) rule about wearing heels for the event. Yes, it's widely known that the festival requires women to wear high heels on the red carpet, and even turned some attendees away in 2015 after they rocked up in flats. However, the actress first shared her thoughts on the outdated rule last year, saying: “People get very upset if you don’t wear heels or whatever. “I feel like you can’t ask people that any more – it’s a given. If you’re not asking guys to wear heels and a dress, you cannot ask me either.” Well, this year Kristen put her money where her mouth is and literally kicked off her heels in front of the world’s media. Yes, the actress was wearing torturously high Louboutins for the plush event but chose to take them off and carry them in her hand as she walked up the stairs and into a screening. The pictures of the actress taking her shoes off literally made headline news around the world, and we can’t help but think how ridiculous that is.

Kristen isn’t the first actress to push-back against the red carpet rule though. In 2015, Emily Blunt called the rule “very disappointing” and said that “everyone should wear flats, to be honest". "We shouldn’t be wearing high heels anyway," she added. "That’s my point of view.” The next year, Julia Roberts also made the front pages for walking the red carpet barefoot for the premiere of her movie Money Monster.
