92 women from around the world came together in a hope of nabbing the title of Miss Universe 2017. And while Ireland unfortunately did not take home the crown, last night's performance was the best from the country in seven years. Cailín Toibín from Cork nabbed a place in the top 16, becoming the first contestant to reach a spot so coveted in seven years since Roz Purcell came fifth in 2010.
Last night the crown was taken home by 22-year-old Miss South Africa Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters who will now earn a generous year-long salary and will move into a luxury New York City apartment.
Many former contestants who won Miss Universe ended up launching incredible careers like Olivia Culpo who now works as a famous model and influencer, even launching a clothing collection with PrettyLittleThing earlier this year. Cailín Toibín will now return to Ireland to resume her title as Miss Ireland and continue working as a model.
Steve Harvey also returned to the stage this year despite his well-known mess-up in 2015 when he announced the wrong winner of the pageant. Thankfully however this year saw no mistakes and Miss South-Africa received a smooth crowning ceremony with no hiccups. We here at Her are delighted for Cailín in doing such a fantastic job representing Ireland and we wish her every success. Feature photo credit - Getty Images
