A Norwegian Christmas ad that features Santa Claus and his boyfriend is currently breaking hearts left, right and centre.
The four-minute ad - which is adorably titled When Harry Met Santa - comes courtesy of Posten, the Norwegian postal service.
In it, we see a budding relationship between our dapper protagonist and the main man himself. While their chemistry is undeniable, Santa is a busy man. Their time together is few and far between, with Mr Claus promising Harry he'll see him again next year.
As time goes by, Harry spends time with his sister and his niece, all while going through the trials and tribulations of long-distance love.
Eventually, he pens Santa a sweet letter which reads: "Dear Santa, all I want for Christmas is you."
The big day arrives and Harry is all dressed up for Santa and ready to go. When the doorbell rings however, it's not Santa waiting at the door, but a postal worker.
Disappointed, he returns to his house, packages in hand, and, sure enough, Santa is waiting for him by the chimney.
He tells him: "Well, I arranged some help this year, so I can be with you."
The ad closes with an important message, recognising the history of LGBT+ rights in Norway.
It reads: "In 2022, Norway marks 50 years of being able to love whoever we want."
Indeed, this year sees the Scandinavian country celebrate 50 years since the decriminalisation of homosexuality.
Speaking to LGBTQ Nation, Posten's marketing director Monica Solberg said: "Posten is an inclusive workplace with great diversity, and we would like to celebrate the 50th anniversary with this fine love story. In last year’s campaign, Santa was angry at Norway Post, which took away from him the ‘business’ – this year, Santa is happy that Norway Post can relieve him a little, so that he can be with the one he loves."
She added: "There will certainly be some negative reactions from some environments, but we are prepared to deal with that. The right to love whoever you want is a fundamental human right, and is not considered a political issue in free democratic societies in 2021."
Needless to say, When Harry Met Santa has gone down an absolute treat on social media.
One Twitter user shared the video and wrote: "This is wholesome and beautiful."
Another demanded a full-length feature film version, and frankly, we would like to see it too.
Rom-coms have always mattered; Hollywood just failed to treat them right In Love Actually, Hugh Grant thinks of the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport when he feels gloomy about the state of the world, but when reality is starting to get to me, I turn to rom-coms, especially ones like the Richard Curtis classic. Rom-coms […]
