The first trailer for She Said, a film about the Me Too movement and New York Times article that made the world aware of the abuse disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein committed, has dropped.
The film stars Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan, who play the two New York Times investigative journalists that made the story known to the world, Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor.
The film follows the two reporters as they uncover the truth behind Weinstein's actions and subsequently helped launch the #MeToo movement that swept through Hollywood.
Their reporting on the sexual abuse carried out by Weinstein on a huge number of women in Hollywood over decades led to numerous well known actors coming forward and bringing the producer to justice.
The film is directed by Maria Schrader and written by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, and set for release on November 18th. It is based on the New York Times bestseller, She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement, which detailed how Twohey and Kantor built trust with women to come forward and tell their stories, breaking decades of silence.
Tom Pelphrey, Patricia Clarkson, Andre Braugher and Samantha Morton also star in the film, with Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleine on board as producers.
The first trailer shows the two journalists come together to uncover the story, going to various women to ask for their trust in recounting the abuse, with many refusing to speak out of fear of being sued.
The official “She Said” synopsis from Universal Pictures reads: “Two-time Academy Award nominee Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan star as New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, who together broke one of the most important stories in a generation— a story that helped propel the #MeToo movement, shattered decades of silence around the subject of sexual assault in Hollywood and altered American culture forever.”
The powerful trailer sees Kazan's character Kantor looking into sexual harassment across business sectors when she discovers that the entertainment industry is rampant with the issue. Approaching Twohey, Mulligan's character, the women come together to sympathise with those affected and attempt to get them to do the impossible, go on the record about this and ensure that what happened to them doesn't happen to any other women in the industry.
Once the story outed Weinstein's crimes, he was sentenced to 23 years in prison on charges of sexual assault and third-degree rape. He is currently serving his sentence in a Californian prison after he was extradited from one in New York.
