Will Colin Farrell return as The Penguin? Irish actor says one thing is needed for season 2

Fans hoping to see Colin Farrell return as The Penguin may need to temper their expectations.

Speaking to Variety at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night, Farrell spoke about the possibility of a second season for The Penguin, HBO’s hit spinoff of The Batman. 

"I don’t want it. I don’t not want it," Farrell said. "We gave it everything over those eight hours. I’d hate for a second season to feel like a diluted version of what people seem to appreciate about the first. 

"So, I’m in no rush. I have no deep desire to do it."  

He didn’t completely rule out the idea and said that if a compelling concept came about that aligned with Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe, he’d be open to considering it. 

"If they come up with something that makes sense and fits within that world, sure."

"But it’s not something I’m actively thinking about," he added.  

DC Studios co-chief, Peter Safran also weighed in on the uncertainty surrounding a second season of The Penguin at a press event last Friday. 

"We don’t know," Safran admitted when asked about the show’s future. 

"There are a lot of moving pieces - probably most importantly, Colin himself. And 800 pounds of makeup."  

Farrell’s performance in The Penguin has been widely praised despite the season 2 uncertainty, earning him the SAG Award for Best Male Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie on Sunday night. 

However, whether or not he dons the prosthetics again remains to be seen.
