Brace yourself for these shiver-inducing revelations that might make you rethink your towel routine.
According to the survey, conducted by Showers to You, 3% of respondents in the UK admit to washing their bathroom towels just once a year.
That's 1,595,646 people neglecting their towels' TLC.
Men take the lead in the "once a year" club, with 5% confessing to this towel-washing frequency, compared to 1% of women.
While 8% opt for a biannual towel cleanse, 33% play it cool, washing their towels once every three months or less.
This concerning trend may leave bathrooms less pristine than expected and can give rise to a whole host of bacteria.
On the bright side, 38% of respondents proudly boast a monthly towel wash.
While 24% are weekly warriors, and 5% - the hygiene enthusiasts - wash their towels daily.
The survey reveals that 67% wash towels due to visual cues, 61% due to unpleasant smells, and 58% based on the number of uses.
Alarmingly, 15% wait until their towels turn stiff before giving them a bath of their own (cue the aforementioned shivers).
While 11% of respondents appear unconcerned about hygiene, Dr. Hamdan Abdullah Hamed, a board-certified Dermatologist, urges people to regularly wash their towels to avoid bacterial and fungal growth.
He explained that towels can harbour dangers like staphylococcus aureus and Candida yeast, which can lead to skin infections and other health issues.
So, if you’re among those waiting a little too long for the towel wash, it's time to rethink your habits and embrace a more regular routine.
Your skin - and your bathroom - will thank you for it!
