The bride still wanted to mark the occasion and decided she would take the photos in memory of her late partner.
Her old school friend, photographer Rachel Heller, came on board to help out.
Rachel had been worried about getting the images perfect but said that when she saw Nikki on the day of the shoot that she knew the photographs would show the bride's "grief and resilience and strength and vulnerability and authenticity all at once."
Nikki decided to carry Collin's cap and an American flag in some of the pictures.
Afterwards, she said she was thrilled with them.
"She captured images that still vividly show the pain left behind; images that show I am still able to laugh, smile and be me; images that show this loss has not and will not destroy me; and my favourite, images that show I am still just as fierce as ever and refuse to let this define me," she told USA Today.
