While the population of the country is not far short of the five million mark, the number of births are falling.
The CSO estimates the population of Ireland is 4,921,500 with women outnumbering men by 2,483,500 to 2,438,000.
It seems that 2018 was a less fertile year than the year before, as there were 61,016 births registered in 2018, which is 23.2 percent lower than 2017.
