Roger was the epitome of a polymath, the man did it all. He was a revolutionary, a British diplomat, humanitarian activist and a poet. He’s described as the “father of twentieth-century human rights investigations” for the work he did in the Congo and Peru.
He was an instrumental figure in the 1916 rising, trying to secure ammunition and weaponry at Banna Strand in Tralee from the Germans to aid the Irish republicans fight for independence.
Casement was not shot by firing squad like his comrades after the rebellion, instead he was arrested by the British, convicted and executed for treason. He was 51 years of age at the time.
According to a wonderful article, written in The Irish Times, Roger was subjected to humiliation after his death.
“The British government decided to have his anus and lower bowel examined for evidence of his homosexuality. His sexual orientation seemed to have a higher priority than his politics.”
Indeed, Casement was said to be gay. British officials in an attempt to tarnish his good name, circulated private excerpts from his journals known as the Black Diaries which detailed his sexual encounters with young men. However, some believe that these diaries were forged in an effort to discredit Casement.
This incident prompted poet William Butler Yeats to write a poem entitled Roger Casement
“Come speak your bit in public That some amends be made To his most gallant gentleman That is in quicktime laid.”Little did Roger Casement know, on the 100 year anniversary of his death that he would be object of a lot of peoples desire. To be fair, good ol Casement wouldn't look out of place in a hipster bar wearing a lumberjack shirt, skinny black jeans and sipping on some imported pale ale. It's not just us who seem to think so. People just can't seem to stop objectifying the fearless revolutionary. https://twitter.com/Bubblenoma/status/760811661192261632 https://twitter.com/doshea3/status/760770182239358976 https://twitter.com/JFACasey/status/756453298983624704 https://twitter.com/AnnaDevs/status/728951335324921858 https://twitter.com/dubreviewbooks/status/760809348415229952
