People were commenting below the picture saying how irresponsible it was and how it lacked respect for emergency services.
"Very foolish and irresponsibly... I just hope you haven’t inspired some impresionable young person to copy later today!" "So irresponsible. Putting themselves and our rescue teams at risk. Poor example." "Really stupid thing to do, encouraging other people to do the same and putting others at risk. Foolish example!" "Horrendous post, very poor judgement. Total lack of respect for emergency services." "People's mothers, fathers , sister's, brothers, friends who work for the coastguard etc could have had to risk their lives going out to rescue you this morning despite the numerous warnings given, don't encourage others to follow you into a potentially dangerous situation, stay safe everyone." "The RNLI volunteers were already needed for kite surfers who went out today and this post does nothing to warn people of the dangers of going into the sea, not just for your own safety but gambling the lives of the rescue services. Such a disappointing post!"The pair responded with an apology saying:
"Sorry if we offended anyone swimming this morning with storm warnings but it was actually a really calm, peaceful morning, winds are picking up now so mind yourself and your loved one today."They also released the following statement:
"We're sorry if we offended anyone with our swim this morning. We swim in the sea at The Cove in Greystones almost every day and in the early hours this morning the sky was blue, the sea was really calm - there was no wind or storm brewing in Greystones at this early hour - so we got in for our daily brief swim.
We have the greatest respect for the emergency services, our experienced fellow swimmers, and our families, and none of us would have got into the water if there was a risk at this time and if it wasn't so calm.We fully appreciate that it's a very different picture now so please stay safe, keep away from the water, and mind yourselves."
