Ireland's favourite tweet of the year goes to one of Ireland's favourite men of the year, Paul Mescal. Not only was he the star of one of the biggest shows of the year, but he's the star of Irish social media too.
This year saw everyone watching a lot more telly including the hit show Normal People. Everyone was talking about Irish actor Paul Mescal, his chain and those GAA shorts. He even made GAA shorts sexy.
Well, apparently Mescal's tweet was Irelands most liked tweet of the year - and it was quite simply: "I'm Irish." The tweet was in response to British media claiming Paul as one of their own after he was nominated for an Emmy. His answer was perfect and that's why we love him even more now. Mescal's tweet was like over 131,000 times. Not only does he have a place in our hearts as the lad who was in Ballyhaunis or who made Irish sports shorts sexy. No, we love him because because he's Irish too. As for the trending topics on Irish Twitter this year, there's no surprise that one of the top topics was the pandemic, with #Covid19 and #Coronavirus being the top used hashtags of the year. Irish Twitter was also very active with #BlackLivesMatter and #GeorgeFloyd trending earlier this year.I’m Irish.
