Irish households urged to pour boiling water down sinks this week

A warning has been shared with Irish households

There's been quite a noticeable drop in the temperature here in Ireland, and homeowners are being urged to do one thing to protect their homes this autumn.

The cooler weather means you're bound to find more spiders and other insects in your home, including silverfish.

You'll often see them in the kitchen, particularly on countertops, and while they're harmless, we'd rather not have them in our homes.

Silverfish are harmless to humans as they don't bite, sting, or carry any diseases, but they do feed on paper, glue, and linens, as well as human food and dead insects.

They tend to thrive in damp and humid parts of your home like the kitchen and bathroom.

Luckily, there's a way to keep the pests out of your home.

According to experts, one way to prevent a silverfish infestation is to sanitise your sink with bleach and boiling water.

This will stop silverfish from entering your kitchen or bathroom through the sink. They're notorious for scaling the plumbing in homes, so Irish homeowners have been advised to do this in September.

Keeping your house as clean as possible will also help keep the pests away.

"Daily cleaning to keep on top of things and then a weekly good going over means silverfish won’t have a good reason to stick around."

“Keep dust off books, and keep the bathroom floor mopped so there’s no dead skin cells around. Chuck out your old newspapers/mags so you’re not leaving them things to chomp at.”
