Workers noticed a strong smell "some weeks ago", according to a source, but no-one suspected what it might actually be until a poor cleaner found what was really causing it - a piece of cardboard covered in human waste stuffed into the fan at the back of the fridge.
"It was some weeks ago that they first noticed the stink," the source told The Sun.
"Management asked everyone to clear out any food from a fridge. Yet the bad smell got even worse — with staff even cracking jokes about an ‘RTE Soiler Alert’.
"Keen to get to the bottom of the issue, the cleaners investigated. And it was only when they removed the fridge they located a piece of cardboard smeared with human dung in its fan.
"The smell was horrific, the type that lingers in your nostrils even when you’ve left."
Wonder what happened to that seriously disgruntled (and downright sick) employee in RTÉ to have done something so foul.
