Tinder is going to become more inclusive to transgender and non-binary people

Everyone's favourite dating app is set to become a lot more inclusive and friendlier for transgender users in the coming months.

The app has never accounted for the demographic of people who don't conform to a singular gender, or who don't identify as the gender they were assigned at birth. Tinder CEO Sean Rad was in a talk with Recode and said that the new feature will help users more accurately specify what they are looking for and how they personally identify. Rad did admit that the app had not been historically very accommodating of trans people

“For a long time we haven’t done enough to give them a good experience. It’s harder for them to get what they are looking for. We have to modify our experience to address that.”

The company is working with GLAAD and trans activist Andrea James to make sure that the update considers all the subtleties and possible roadblocks that trans or non-binary people encounter when they're in the middle of a swiping session. There's no word yet on when the update will arrive, with Rad saying it is taking a while because they want to be certain that it will be a success, and ease the experience of online dating for trans people.
