30 dogs die of heat stroke after being left in a hot van

30 dogs are believed to have died of heat stroke after being left in a hot van in the Philippines. The dogs were being transported to a dog show by an exhibitor near Manila on December 2. It is thought that on arrival, some of the dogs had already died due to the lack of ventilation in the van. Footage has emerged online of people trying to revive the dogs who are lying lifelessly on the ground. CNN Philipines has reported that around 40 dogs were being transported for the Beagle Fanciers club dog show. Authorities have said that the breeder could face up to 90 years in prison for transporting the dogs in the poorly ventilated van. Senator Francis Pangilinan also said that they could face a fine of over €100,000. He said:

"It’s time to stop treating animals as mere commodities. How we regard animals show our capacity for empathy and decency, kindness and humanity."

In a statement on Facebook, the Philippine Canine Club said that they condemn the "tragic accident" and that the person responsible has been suspended. An investigation is ongoing. Images via Penny Cham Facebook.
