The baby grant was introduced to help new parents cope with the financial pressures of parenthood.
According to the head of the Oireachtas Social Protection Committee, the grant has been paid in respect of 19,750 newborns so far.
Fine Gael's John Paul O'Shea stated:
"The newborn baby grant was introduced in last year’s Budget to help families with the costs of a new arrival.
"The grant demonstrates our continued commitment to putting money back in people’s pockets and ensuring all children have positive experiences and get off to a great start in life."
"This grant has been introduced to support young families, but we need to do more."
In Budget 2025, the Irish Government confirmed a bonus payment would be given to new parents.
They confirmed that parents who welcome babies from December 1st, 2024, would be awarded the Newborn Baby Grant.
Anyone who welcomes a child from December 1st will receive the payment, but the amount differs depending on how many children you welcome.
The grant of €280 will be paid to new parents born or adopted on or after December 1st, 2024.
The payment is €280 per child, but it will be €560 if you have twins, and €840 for triplets.
