Anti-abortion group puts call out for volunteers for UCD protest tomorrow

An anti-abortion group is seeking volunteers for a protest outside UCD tomorrow morning. The Irish Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform wants people to help out with its display of 'abortion victim photography' at the bus stop off at the N11 entry entrance to the university tomorrow morning. It also wants volunteers to join a demonstration at the Aungier St entrance to DIT in the afternoon. The group is known for its use of graphic posters showing aborted foetuses. "We are doing displays at all the main universities around Dublin," a representative told the University Observer. "We want as many students as possible to be given the opportunity to engage with the reality of abortion." In response, the UCDSU Welfare Officer Eoghan MacDomhnaill urged anyone who may find the images upsetting to avoid the N11 gate to the university. The protests follow similar displays outside a school on Marlboro St in Dublin city centre last week and at Trinity College, Leinster House and the Irish Times building on Tara Street. The group is aligned with an international Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform. Its directors are all from and based in the US and Canada. On its website, the ICBR says it condemns violence and likens its efforts to Martin Luther King's struggle for racial equality in the states. "Just as Dr Martin Luther King sought to create a 'creative tension' to awaken the nation to the horrible injustice of segregation, we too are creating a 'creative tension' to awaken the nation to the horrible injustice of abortion."
