Coronavirus: There’s been a mixed reaction to the news that Phase 4 will be delayed

"The concern about the rise in cases is very real"

It was announced last night by the Government that our entry into Phase 4 has been delayed due to fears about the resurgence of the Coronavirus. Following  a cabinet meeting, the Taoiseach Micheál Martin said "This virus has not changed, indiscriminate in its cruelty and relentless," adding that the "concern about the rise in cases in recent weeks is very real, the reproductive number has risen above 1 in this country". The key areas that were highlighted in the briefing were face coverings need to be worn in all shops and retail settings, social visits to people's homes will be capped at ten people from no more than four households, pubs will remain closed until the 10th of August (pubs that are serving food can stay open), all non-essential travel is still being advised and current restrictions on indoor and outdoor gatherings are continuing. The Taoiseach explained the rationale behind these decisions:

The reaction to the news has been welcomed by many but others are feeling disappointed after the countries earlier progression:

I may get my head bitten off but I’m glad they have delayed phase 4, I think it’s the right thing & yes I think they should stop tourists flying in too.

Not moving to phase 4 is a huge disappointment. Months were spent creating guidelines with @HSELive approval. Open for 17 days as a hotel community with no issues. The July Stimulus is critical to protect 260,000 jobs @MichealMartinTD @mmcgrathtd @LeoVaradkar @cathmartingreen

In terms of travel the Government will be publishing a 'green list' of countries on Monday and the list will be kept under constant review. We were due to enter Phase 4 from Monday, July 20th.
