Family pay tribute to ‘little angel’ who died after Majorca balcony fall

The Taoiseach has also paid tribute.

Clodagh, who was from County Wicklow and was a talented GAA and rugby player, died on Monday morning (22 July).

Her death notice reads that she was "the darling only daughter of her heartbroken parents Liam and Valerie and dearly loved sister of Will and David."

It ends: "Sleep in peace, Clodagh, our little angel."

Described as a 'beautiful, spirited child', Clodagh was a member of Parnell Athletic Club based in Rathdrum, Wicklow.

Taoiseach Simon Harris led tributes to the 11-year-old writing: "So sad to hear of the tragic loss of Clodagh Phelan. So much promise and personality snatched away in a terrible accident. Thoughts with her family and community at this truly awful time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam."

Parnell Athletic Club also paid tribute writing: "Parnell A.C. are truly heartbroken to share the devastating news of the passing of Clodagh Phelan, one of our juvenile athletes and friend to many of our younger athletes.

"Clodagh was a beautiful, spirited child and a great athlete who excelled in many sports, not just athletics. Her family Valerie, Liam, Will, and David and extended family are in our hearts, thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

"As a mark of respect and to allow us all time to grieve the loss of Clodagh, there will be no training until further notice."

News outlet the Majorca Daily Bulletin states that the incident occurred on the seventh floor of a hotel in the town of Alcúdia in Majorca, a popular area for Irish people to holiday.

It is said that the child was staying with her parents.

At around 6.45am, emergency teams were reportedly alerted to the incident.

Despite their best efforts, the girl was pronounced dead at the scene, the Majorca Daily Bulletin states.

It also says that, according to the initial police investigation, the incident is believed to be a tragic accident.

In a statement to JOE, a Department of Foreign Affairs spokesperson said: "The Department of Foreign Affairs is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance."
