Hundreds of heartbroken supporters gather in touching tribute to ‘warrior’ Alfie Evans

More than a 1,000 people are said to have been there.

Hundreds of heartbroken supporters gathered to pay tribute to Alfie Evans, the "warrior" toddler who passed away today. His parents, Tom Evans, 21, and 20-year-old Kate James, had fought to keep him on life-support as they sought innovative treatment outside their native UK. Following numerous court decisions, doctors decided this week to withdraw medical intervention. The 23-month-old toddler's heartbroken parents confirmed on Saturday morning that little Alfie had passed away at 2.30am. Following the news, more than 1,000 supporters reportedly gathered at a park near Liverpool's Alder Hey Children's Hospital in tribute. The Mirror reports that many people were holding blue and purple balloons as they joined the crowd, as one girl began singing Christina Perri's A Thousand Years.  Mourners could be heard chanting Alfie's name, as well as crying and consoling each other, before the balloons were released into the sky around 3pm. The publication reports that Alfie's devastated aunt, Sarah Evans, addressed the crowd - thanking them all for being there, before paying tribute to the little boy. She said:

"I just want to thank you all for coming today.

"Our gorgeous little warrior took his last breath at 2.30 this morning.

"Our hearts are broken. We are absolutely shattered as a family. "Thomas [Sarah's brother and Alfie's dad] just wants to thank you all for the support you've all shown. There's only one Alfie Evans."
