Met Éireann issues weather warning for 14 counties as ex-Hurricane Humberto approaches

Met Éireann has issued a weather warning for 14 counties in the east of Ireland ahead of ex-Hurricane Humberto's arrival.

The Meteorological Service has put a Status Yellow Thunder Warning in place for Monaghan, Waterford and all of Leinster. Members of the public there can expect localised thunderstorms today and tonight, bringing heavy rainfall and the risk of spot flooding. The warning came into effect at 11am this morning and will remain in place until 3am tomorrow, Sunday. It follows Met Éireann's forecast for "very unsettled" weather right through next week. "Wet and very windy" interludes are forecast right through to the end of the week as the tail end of Hurricane Humberto approaches. The cyclone swept across the Caribbean in recent days, taking down power lines across Bermuda and leaving 80 per cent of the country in the dark. Fortunately, it's not expected to be as destructive here but we can expect a definite change from the sunshine we've been enjoying. On Monday "a spell of rain and strong winds will push into the west before midday and will quickly spread countrywide with fresh and gusty southeasterly winds," Met Éireann said.

"Further outbreaks of rain on Monday night but winds will moderate for a time overnight. "More rain will follow on Tuesday although some areas may see some dry weather. Winds will be generally moderate but fresh to strong along southern coasts. "Continuing wet and windy on Wednesday with further outbreaks of showery rain and temperatures in the mid to late teens."

Current indications suggest that the rest of the week will be "cool and windy".
