Jessie Buckley becomes the first Irish woman to win Best Actress Oscar

In a charming acceptance speech, Buckley dedicated her award to "the beautiful chaos of a mother's heart."

The Bride actress also paid tribute to her baby girl, Isla.

"And Isla, my little girl, who is eight months, who has absolutely no idea what's going on and is probably dreaming of milk, but this is kind of a big deal. I love you, and I love being your mom, and I can't wait to discover life beside you."

Speaking backstage after her groundbreaking win, Buckley said winning on Mother's Day feels extra special.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, she said:

“First Irish woman to win and on Mother’s Day — it feels like some kind of crazy alchemy that all of these things are colliding on a day like today. My daughter got her first tooth this week. I woke up with her lying on my chest, snuggling me.”

“I feel like what a gift to get to explore motherhood through this incredible mother, this is and was,” she said, speaking about her character Agnes in Hamnet.

"And then to become one myself, and then to receive this recognition of the incredible role mothers play in our world on this day is something I will never, ever forget.”

Jessie is the third Irish actress to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress. She follows in the footsteps of Saoirse Ronan and Ruth Negga.

Jessie wasn't the only Irish winner at the 98th Academy Awards. Tallaght's Richard Baneham won his third Oscar for his visual effects work on Avatar: Fire and Ash.
