Miley Cyrus reveals why going on tour brings a risk of losing her voice

The Malibu singer shared that she likely won't go on tour again as health concerns pose a risk of losing her voice. 

Ahead of her upcoming album, Something Beautiful, DJ Zane Lowe interviewed Cyrus on The Zane Lowe Show.

Cyrus revealed that her rasp is caused by a non-cancerous polyp (growth) on her vocal cords:

“I have this very large polyp on my vocal cord, which has given me a lot of the tone and the texture that has made me who I am, but it’s extremely difficult to perform with because it’s like ­running a marathon with ankle weights on.”

The singer also revealed that she has Reinke’s Oedema, which, according to the Cleveland Clinic, is the benign swelling of the vocal cords.

Cyrus says that it's what makes her voice hers, but it makes it difficult to repeatedly perform.

And although it can be treated through surgery, Cyrus says to Lowe that she doesn't want to risk her voice sounding different:

“My voice is super-unique because of it, but I do have this Reinke’s Oedema and I have this large polyp on my cords — and I’m not willing to sever it because the chance of waking up from surgery and not sounding like myself is a probability.”

Previously, the singer said that she would not go on tour again because it wasn’t the best thing for her, and that her looks don’t travel well

Her album, Something Beautiful, will be released on May 30th.
